How can I upgrade my Windows Surface RT 8.1 tablet to Windows 10?

Little by little, I can do less and less on my Windows RT 8.1 Surface tablet.  I cannot download Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.  YouTube soon will stop working on it.  BBC iPlayer is not running properly (you cannot make it full screen or stop and start programmes without closing the whole window).  The PDF reader has stopped working too.  Etc...

I have tried to download Windows 10 from the Microsoft website, but the reply that I get is: this app can't run on this PC. 

How can I overcome this problem?  This is a good quality tablet and I would hate to have to buy a new one because this one is becoming obsolete.

I have always been a fan of Windows (I used to buy Windows phones - my husband still has one and there are plenty of apps that he cannot download) but I am getting fed up of the fact that Windows products (and its users) are being 'abandoned' and no longer properly updated and supported.  It is the wrong attitude for a company to have when - thankfully - our 'throw away' culture is becoming old fashioned at long last as we are watching our planet 'suffer' from our excessive consumption.

You can only install apps from the Windows store. No third party programs can be installed on the Surface rt 8.1. Nor can you upgrade it to Windows 10.

I Absolutely agree with you.

Microsoft has been really unprofessional when it comes to Surface RT.

No Win10 development and even worst, Surface RT is locked and doesn't allow different Operating Systems to be installed or even run from USB. ie Linux, ChromeOS(Chromium), Android....

To be honest, Surface PCs are practical (I have RT and Pro) but based on Microsoft's mentality of how they handled their Surface RT customers, I ended up not buying any new Microsoft products again.

I switched to Macbook Air....up to now I am very satisfied!!

Microsoft must provide alternative options to their Surface RT customers...ie update to allow installation of other Operating Systems or even update to Win10 with more compatible applications.

Thank you LL.  That's settled then.  No upgrade possible.  Such a shame when you believe that you have bought a high quality product.  I'll keep it going until I absolutely cannot do anything with it then invest in a more versatile product.  Kind regards, Sandrine

Does anyone know if Tubecast still works to run YouTube, on a Surface RT?  Definitely switching to an Apple product after this. So disappointing to have to buy a new product, only because a company is too greedy to update its software.

Totally agrees with you. Windows RT locked itself down. And plan to buy no more windows product.
