Error 1601 Windows installer is not accessible

I am trying to install Turbo Tax and get the error message:  Windows installer is not accessible.  Installation can't continue because the Windows Installer could be accessed.  Error Code 1601.

I have tried the solutions available in support.microsoft.com but nothing works.

What trouble shooting steps did you try?

This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The Windows Installer files that are on your hard disk are damaged or are missing.
  • You install or remove a program that uses the Windows Installer Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) package file (.msi). For example, this may occur when you try to install Microsoft Office on your computer.

Let us try the below methods.

Method 1:  To check whether the Windows Installer service is set to a value of Disable

  1. Click Start, type services.msc in the start search box and press enter.
  2. In the Services (Local) list, right-click Windows Installer, and then click Properties.
  3. If the Startup type drop-down list is set to a value of Disable, select the Manual option from the Startup type drop-down list.
  4. Click on Start button below the heading service status and click OK.

Method 2: Re-register the windows installer

  1. Click Start, open the run box (windows key +R)
  2. Type msiexec.exe /unreg and click ok.
  3. If you receive a confirmation message, click OK again.
  4. Click Start, open the run box (windows key +R)
  5. Type msiexec /regserver and click ok.
  6. If you receive a confirmation message, click OK again.
  7. Try to install the application and see if the issue persists.
  8. If you still get the error then try next method.

Method 3

Download the latest version of windows installer and install It on your computer.

Try these-

1. Go to a Windows Vista(any version) computer that has the Windows Installer service running correctly and run regedit(start-run-regedit).

2. Go to the location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver
3. Right click on this key and select "Export" and save the key to a Flash Drive or other.
4. Double click saved .reg file from working machine and import registry settings into damaged Vista computer.

 

OR 

 

Copy the below text and save it in a notepad in your desktop. Then rename the file as fix.reg. Double click on it and click on Yes when prompted. Download and install latest version of itunes.
