Unable to install Windows Updates error 0x80240440

Hi,

1) Are you receiving any specific Error code while trying to update?

2) Do you have any third party security software installed?

Try the following methods and check the status of the issue.

Method 1:

Run Windows Update troubleshooter and check if it helps. Refer the following steps:

a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard, this will bring the search interface.

b) Type in ‘Troubleshooting’ and click on ‘Settings’ for the result.

c) Under ‘Troubleshoot computer problem’ click on ‘View all’ on panel to the left.

d) Open ‘Windows Update’ troubleshooter.

Method 2:

Set the computer to ‘Clean boot’ state to check software conflicts. Refer the following steps:

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) On the General tab, click to select the option ‘Selective startup’, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box.

d) On the ‘Services tab’, click to select the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ check box, and then click Disable all.

e) Click OK, and then click Restart.

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

1) Are you receiving any specific Error code while trying to update?
I am getting error code 0x80240440 in the windows update window and error code 0x80072efe in the log file.

2) Do you have any third party security software installed?
No

Method 1:
Windows troubleshooter did not work

Method 2:
Disabled all non-microsoft startup items, still no go.

Please follow action plan mentioned below.

1. In the start menu type CMD.

2. In the left pane, click on the program that reads“command prompt”

3. Right-click on the command prompt and select “RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR”

4. Once the command prompt Window is opened, copy and paste the following commands one by one

a)   net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
net stop trustedinstaller

 

b) bitsadmin.exe /reset /allusers

 

c) sc.exe sdset bits D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

 

d) sc.exe sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

 

e) Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"

 

f) takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
Ren c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml pending.old

 

g)  net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc
net start trustedinstaller

 

Once all the commands are executed successfully, restart the computer and try to install updates

I tried these steps, and after rebooting I still can't get Windows Update working.

Method 1: Running Microsoft Safety Scanner

Click in the link http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx and download and run Microsoft Safety Scanner.

Method 2: Enabling automatically detect settings

a. Open Internet Explorer

b. Click on ‘tools’ and then on ‘internet options’

c. Click on ‘Connections’ tab and then on ‘Lan Settings’

d. Check the box which says ‘Automatically detect settings’

I have tried both of those methods and I am still not able to update.

I as well am seeing this problem with both the Win8 client and Win Server 2012. Snips from the WindowsUpdate.log from both are below:
