my computer is home premium 32-bit Vista
I set windows to update automatically, and when that wasnt working tried to download SP2 from microsoft download center. and every one of my browsers says its a broken link.

initial error code was 80240016 so i followed the advice at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957307

then got this error 80072EFD so i did the suggestion by dlbowdoin here:

Hi 9claws,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum.

I would suggest you some steps to follow before proceeding to update the service pack.

Step 1:

Make sure you remove the Vista SP2 updates completely from the Programs and Features and then try and do Vista SP2 updates.

 1.  Please go to Control Panel select ‘Programs and Features’, click on view installed updates and then uninstall the updates that are causing the issue.

 2.  If you are not able to remove the update from ‘Programs and Features’, please use the windows cleanup utility tool to remove the updates.

Please use the link below to download the windows clean up utility:

Step 2:

Download the System Readiness Tool before you perform Windows Update. The System Update Readiness Tool checks your computer and tries to resolve certain conditions that could interfere with the installation of updates or other software. Here is a link to download System Readiness Tool, do it according to the exact configuration of the system:

Step 3:

Now try and download the service pack, here are two links you can use to try and download the service packs:

Here check for the Download Windows Vista Service Pack 2 details. You will also get further steps in this article to help you know if the download and installation is happening properly.

After the download is complete do the installation in the “Safe mode with Networking” option. Do remember the exact place where the downloaded data has been kept. To start the system in safe mode follow the below mentioned steps:

1-      Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your   computer.

2-      Click Start, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart.

3-      Press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts.
Note: You have to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you must try to restart your computer. To do this, wait until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shut down and restart your computer.

4-      On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode with Networking option, and then press ENTER.

5-      Log on to your computer by using a user account that has administrator rights.

After coming in safe mode do the installation. And then restart the system in normal mode. You should be able to get the resolution.

Thanks,
Hope this helps. Let us know the results.
