Vista werfault.exe hogging cpu %, windows update of service pack 1 fails with error code 643..... upgrade to 7 or buy a macbook?

I'm running windows vista.  i can't find a way to turn off 'werfault.exe' (windows error reporting), which according to hours of searching and reading, is directly related to the cpu running at near 100% continuously and severely slowing even the simplest of tasks.  was thinking of upgrading to windows 7, but the sevice pack 1 update needs to be installed and vista continues to fail the installation daily referencing error code 643 (i'm suppose to uninstall .net framework files and reinstall.... blah, blah, blah) and i also found that windows 7 also has automatic error reporting which, i would assume, would cause the same cpu problems.

so, here's my dilemma, should i buy a macbook or macbook pro?  Someone from Microsoft, please convince me otherwise by providing an easy, user friendly explanation to fix these problems that will take me less than 60 seconds to automatically run a fix.  I don't really have time to spend troubleshooting a computer when i have three kids under four and real work to do that would be more productive if i could actually use the software i purchased versus trying to figure out how to fix an operating system.  i'm a finance guy, not a programmer.

Hey  MrDenver,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

I’ll try my best to resolve your problem in the simplest way.

Windows Error Reporting can be turned off from the Control Panel. Here’s how:

   1. Go to start and type Problem Reports and Solutions in the search field.
   2. Select Problem Reports and Solutions from the search list.
   3. Click the Advanced settings link.
   4. Select Off to turn off Error Reporting.

This should disable werfault.exe process.

Refer:

In Windows 7, Problem Reports and Solutions is part of Action Center. You can also disable the same as per your convenience.

As for Windows update error 0x643, here’s a Microsoft Knowledge base article.

You receive error code 0x80070643 or error code 0x643 when you use the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958052

Apparently the steps would take more than 60 seconds to fix it.

I have the same problem. It has been like this for about a week. I turned off the error reporting program already, but it said I couldn't turn it off because I wasn't a system administrator, which isn't true because I am the only profile/account.

Hi,
I have the same problem and made some postings about it but apperenly they have been 'censored' and removed: Why ?
I have followed the posted procedurs and still have the same problem  )< 8(
I subsequently disabled 'WerFault.Exe' from starting up when windows starts and it is STILL is doing exactly the same thing  )< 8(
As I posted before, sometimes I am able to close the WerFault.Exe instances with a 3rd party utility but sometiems I am not.  This is rendering my computer useless!
I need somethings that is actually going to either difinitavely fix this or at least a sucsessful 'work around'.

Hi,
I had the same expereince.  Initially I disabled it in Vista 32 in 'Safe' mode, but when I logged into 'regular, normal windows mode' I got the same results as you did.  Do you have the 'User Control Accounts' turned on?  If not it would seem that we aren't recognized as being 'Administrators'  Once I reactiveted the 'User accounts' with a PassWord for the Administrator I was able to completely disable it.  However WerFault.Exe is STILL being triggered and saturating my CPUs )< 8(   I subsequently disabled 'WerFault.Exe' from starting when windows starts up, but it is STILL doing it!
So now what ?

Good luck to us all,
   DougRH

Hey FRoozen comp and DougRH,

Here's a little insight on the issue.

Many malware programs can show up on your system as seemingly legitimate files by using file names that are very similar to those of legitimate files. Please scan your system using a reliable antivirus and anti-spyware program.

For virus scan we encourage you to use Windows Live One Care.

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?mkt=en-us

Sometimes a false positive report is generated for a perfectly valid file. This is true if virus definition database hasn’t been updated in quite a while. This is the reason why, you must keep your antimalware up-to-date at all times.

Hi Shinmila H

I've followed the procedure but Norton Performance indicates that werfault.exe is still active, the computer is useless when several copies of the files are active.

Any other advice?

Using Vista ultimate

Thanks

Gabgon
