Answer

Hi Bender,

I understand that you are unable to turn on the Windows defender on your Windows 8 computer.

1. Are you getting any error message when you try to turn on the Windows defender?
2. Have you made any recent changes to the computer?

You cannot turn on the Windows Defender if you have installed any third party security software on your computer.

Method 1:

I suggest you to uninstall the Norton antivirus from control panel and then try to turn on the Windows Defender.

You can follow the link mentioned below to uninstall the Norton antivirus.

Security software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 2:

Try the following method to Windows defender.

a. Press the ‘Windows + Q key on the keyboard.
b. Type “Windows Defender” in the search box and then press enter.
c. Click Settings and make sure there is a check mark on Turn on real time protection recommend.
