Windows photo viewer auto rotate

Good evening,

I am having a problem with Windows Photo Viewer and the thumbnails that you can see within File Explorer.
I am having a lot of old photos that I am sorting out and putting in my album.

According to the file explorer thumbnails and the Windows Photo Viewer program (so NOT the app) the photos are in the correct portrait orientation. However when I upload the photos to my album they are in the wrong orientation again.
If I open the photos in Adobe Photoshop they are in the same orientation as when I would upload them to my album. 

So what is going on with the file explorer thumbnails and the Windows Photo Viewer?
Is there a way to turn this (auto rotating) off?

On Windows 7 the Photo Viewer program did not try to be smart and thus I could click the rotate button manual and the program would save my photo in the correct orientation. Can I get this behaviour in Windows 8?

I see that you are facing some problems with Windows Photo Viewer. I will help you with this issue.

 

1.What is the make and model of the computer?

2.Which security software is installed on the computer?

3.Did you make any changes to the computer recently?

4.To which album are you uploading the pictures?

5.Did you try using the photo gallery program?

 

Method 1.

Boot the computer in clean boot and check if that helps. A clean boot helps to verify if any third party application service or startup item is causing this issue.

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 3 in the article to boot to normal startup.

Hi Srimadhwa,

To answer your questions:
1. The computer is Home built with an AMD Phenom II x4 processor. 12 GB of DDR3 ram and a HD7850 videocard.
2. I have AVG AntiVirus installed.
3. I did not make any changes recently, at least not after I installed Windows 8.
4. I am uploading photos to my own website, which I build myself.
5. I did not try using the photo gallery program.

I will try your two methods this evening when I get home.

To give you a bit clearer image of what I am doing:
I double click on a photo which will then open in Windows Photo Viewer (as it did in Windows 7). Then I navigate through my photos using the arrows. If there is a photo I do not like I delete it and when a photo has to be rotated (either left or right) I do so. However in Windows 8 it tries to be smart and rotates the photos for me. Can I turn this behaviour off or is there a way windows will save this new orientation so that I do not have to do it once the photo goes to a different location?

I have tried method 1 and this did not change anything.

In regards to your method 2, Windows Photo Viewer was very easy to use and did not have all the options Photo Gallery has. I am not looking for this functionality. Basically is there a way to turn off the feature that photos are being auto rotated. Also what I have noticed is that if you open a photo in paint it also auto rotates it for you.

I just do not want any of this behaviour ... Is there a way to turn it off?

As above same here.

Both our win 8 machines auto-rotate the thumbnails but not the actual images.

 

If you rotate the images using any imaging program (such as MS picture manager), the thumbnail rotates too, meaning it is still 90 degrees out.

 

This is clearly a windows issue!

Same problem here as well.  I didn't notice till I used drag and drop to put a photo into an email.  The thumbnail was correct but the actually photo did not get rotated properly.  I too would like to be able to disable this feature.  I appreciate your intent but if it doesn't work properly at least give us the option to disable it.

Any answer for this problem? I am also having the same problem with photo looking fine in Photo gallery but when loading into a website like ebay. They are in the wrong rotation. Is there a registry edit or anything to fix this problem. Or maybe just turn off the reading of the exif data in the photo.

What if you send them to EBay upside down. or incorrectly rotated in such a way that they come out correct on EBay.

As far as I know this problem still exists in Windows 8. However as mentioned above the third party tools could be of use to rotate the photos for you.

What I did to solve my problem, is when I upload a photo to my album it will be placed in the correct position based on its EXIF data with the command on linux:

convert -auto-orient source_file dest_file

But again this is just a work around of the problem just as the third party programs mentioned above.
