Windows 7 will not resume after hibernation

Hi,

I recently installed a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on a computer I built.  I was using Win7 RC since last June and it worked perfectly.

My problem is that when I put the computer on hibernate, it wont resume.  I get the screen that says "Windows is resuming" then it goes off and I get the POST screen but it doesnt move from there.  I have to shut off the computer's power and reboot. 

It just started doing this yesterday.  I havent installed any new software or programs and Ive searched online and cant find any answers.  Every other aspect of Win7 works flawlessly though.  Sleep works fine and the system resumes normally.  Restart also works fine and everything boots up properly.  Hibernation is the only issue but I need it because Sleep doesnt shut off my 3 case fans and I dont want to leave them running needlessly overnight and while Im at work.

I get no error messages, it happens everytime I try to resume from hibernation and the driver for my 9600GT is current.

Id appreciate any input.

***EDIT***
Nevermind, I figured it out.  When I used Device Manager to check the driver for my 9600GT it claimed it was current and up to date.  On a hunch, I checked Nvidia's website and the driver listed on their website was dated 11/20/09.  The one on my PC was 9/27/09.  I downloaded and installed the driver from Nvidia's website and now my system resumes normally from hibernate.  Figures I would figure out the answer 10 seconds after I post the question on here!  LOL

Well so much for that.  I guess Im not as good at fixing things as I thought.  My system is back to not resuming from hibernation.  I press a key, the screen comes on "Resuming Windows" but then it goes back to the POST screen (black screen with blinking cursor).

Ive not only installed the latest Nvidia driver but I also installed 5 of the older ones and nothing worked. 

Any ideas???  Standby doesnt turn off my case fans so Im having to shut the computer down at the end of every day.  I ran the Release Candidate for 6 months and never had this problem so Im pretty sure its not a hardware issue.

Any ideas???

Hi, did you get your problem fixed? I'm having the same problem of hibernation giving blank screen on resume and having to reboot the machine.

Do you ever find the fix?  I have an HP lap top with Windows7 upgrade from Vista. I found that after hibernate the screen reads Resume Windows then goes blank. If I do a CTRL-ALT-DEL I get a screen with a list of tasks, then I click on CANCEL. I have my screen.  Therefore it the PC is not locked up, just the screen is in blank mode.

I'm having the same problem. I do have 9600gt with latest drivers on Win7 & Win Xp, both don't resume after hibernation or standby (the screen goes blank after resume). And I have to restart.

I too have the same problem. Keyboard backlight comes   on display shows resuming windows webcam light comes on screen goes blank  and I have to reboot .

Somebody  HHHHHHHHHHHelp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

wake up Microsoft or has Mr Rip Van Winkle himself gone into hibernation??????????????

I am struggling with the same problem.  Windows 7 Ultimate, Dell Studio XPS workstation, nVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 video card, working flawlessly for months. Suddenly this morning, it will not wake up from sleep.  I have tried a dozen possible solutions, nothing has worked so far.  My computer is in a coma!

I can get into Safe Mode, but I don't know what to do to resolve the problem.  I have tried changing the Power Management option to High Performance.  I have tried rolling back to Thursday, then to Wednesday.  Nothing is working. 

Please Help!

... 3 hours later ...        Hmmm, no one helped...

OK, I was FINALLY able to get things working again.  Here's what I did that seemed to matter:

1)  Use a simple wired mouse and keyboard.

2) Restart the system, pressing F8 until the Restart Options page came up.

3) Choose "Restart with Low Resolution Display Settings (640 x 480)"  -- system then boots and arrives at a low-res login screen.  Login normally.

4) After system boots up, change the display settings to normal resolution.

5) Go out to nVidia website and grab the latest video drivers for your system and video card.  Download and install it.

6)  Reboot.  System comes up normally now.  No perma-sleep or perma-black-screen of ignominy.

 * * * Root Cause Here * * *

It turns out that overnight one of the displays in my dual display system silently died overnight.  It happened to be the one designated as the primary login screen, so it *appeared* that the computer was not waking up.  But in reality, it was waiting for me to log in but I could not see anything on that screen -- but not for the reason I thought.  I could see some things on the intentionally black/blank second monitor, including running windows in Safe Mode.  Did not realize this until much later (the power light on the bad display was lit, throwing me off).  Sheesh.

I had this and found that if I remove the Ethernet cable and all usbs except the mouse before waking the laptop it works OK

I have had this problem with every single deployment of windows. I do not understand why after years of this issue existing it has not been fixed. I lose tremendous amounts of work everytime Windows craps out on this hibernation. It occurs nearly everytime hibernation takes effect on my company's work "Dell" laptop.  

It I very frustrating since I dont have this issue on any machine that I have the liberty of changing the operating system.  

Windows 7 hibernation is broke and should be fixed or removed from the software bundle.
