Black screen with cursor after Windows 7 login. Task manager will not open.

The problem:
Whenever I boot up my PC (Dell Studio 1737) and login to my primary account nothing but a black screen appears. Shortly after that a cursor appears also. However, I cannot right click with the cursor. Furthermore, pressing ctrl+alt+del does not pull up the task manager. There is no way to restart the computer save holding the power button. I have tried booting into safe mode and I don't have the problem there. I have run start up repair and system diagnostics with no luck. No problems were detected. I have also tried system restore. That did not work either. There was an error (forgot to right down the error code) with a firefox application file. I have a feeling it is a virus because I was working on cleaning up a friend's horribly infected computer via remote desktop (TeamViewer) and these problems happened shortly after. Though I took many safety precautions while trying to clean my friend's computer I suppose they did not help. I ran virus scans in safe mode using Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware. Nothing was detected. I have given up hope on a quick and easy fix, but anything is better than a full reinstall (I have most of my files backed up online so it wouldn't be a total loss, but I've already had to reinstall once and it was a complete hassle to get everything back to the way I needed it.).

I will post any updates as soon as I can. Thanks for the help!
P.S. I am posting this using a Linux partition on the same computer. Don't know if that''s any help but any detail is as important as another in my opinion. Thanks again!

Hi,
Did  you make any changes?

I would suggest you to try performing clean boot to check if any of the third party services are causing the issue in the background.

Follow the steps below to place your computer in “clean boot”.

1. Click the Start orb on your Desktop
2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
5. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
6. Click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.

If this does resolve the issue, then see the following Microsoft Article on “Clean boot” and the section “How to determine what is causing the problem” to determine which program or service maybe causing the issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

How to set your computer back, to boot normal:

 1. Click the Start  on your Desktop

2. In the Start Search box. Type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

Click the General tab.

3. Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.

4. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

You can also try creating a new user account and check if the same happens there, here is the link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

Also try updating the graphic card drivers and check.

Please respond back with the status of the issue and let us know if you have any issues.
