Info: How to Install your Epson Perfection 1200U/U Photo in Windows 7 32 or 64 bit versions (also Vista)

Yes it's an oldie, but it still has its uses. Fortunately it is possible to install it in both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit OSes and Vista.

Installing this scanner in Windows 7 or Vista 32bit only requires using compatibility mode and administrator priviledges with the XP driver. Download the most recent XP driver (Twain 5 v 5.53) from one of the Epson websites, eg:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=14555&prodoid=9922&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows

http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ProductHome.aspx?lng=en-GB&data=bL44wuSfVbVSVE7H9lU002Ff9dMhimU002FZaqUa&tc=6

These drivers will install both Windows WIA support and Epson's TWAIN scanning interface.

Run the downloaded self-extracting .EXE file. As it extracts the contents to a new folder it will pause to allow you to confirm the folder's location (ie. c:\epson\...). At this point uncheck the box that says "When done unzipping run Setup.exe" and then click the Unzip button to continue. If you get a file/folder creation error while unzipping, run the EXE again with administrator priviledges.  Next, browse to the Setup.exe file in the newly created Epson folder (eg. c:\epson\epson10245) and set the Compatibility options for Windows XP-SP2 and Run as Administrator. I happened to set these options for 'All Users' but that might not be necessary. Make sure that the scanner is NOT plugged in to the computer during the driver installation. Double-click the Setup file to install the scanner drivers and Twain. Reboot the computer.

Now plug in the scanner's USB cable and turn it on. When doing your test scans you'll find that certain applications (ie. MS Paint, Paint.NET and others) can only interface with the MS WIA scanner driver, which is very basic. The WIA driver also, apparently, does not recognise the scanner's TPU (transparency adapter) so it cannot be used for scanning slides or negatives. Epson Twain 5 OTOH works normally for both reflective and transparency scanning. XnView happens to be compatible with the Twain interface if you are in need of an app to test/scan using Epson Twain.

I've installed this driver in both Vista and Windows 7. When installed  cleanly it works like a charm.

Now on to the Win7 64 bit drivers. This is a completely different situation and requires the use of modified (but still Epson based) drivers. Don't know who created the driver package... and I don't care cuz they work. ;-)

At this particular point in time the required driver can be found at either of these two links:

http://www.box.net/shared/5rxsn87mqr

http://rapidshare.com/#!download|64cg2|333376396|epsonScan_1.0_Per1200Win64eu.zip|10518

Download the file "epsonScan_1.0_Per1200Win64eu.zip" and un-zip it. Make sure that your scanner is not connected to the computer, then run Setup.exe. Reboot the computer, then plug in and turn on the scanner.

No compatibility settings were required when I installed it, YMMV on that. (A driver installation folder is created in c:\epson, similar to above.)

This installer puts "Epson Scan Ver. 2.68E" on the computer. It's been modified to include 64bit  support for the Perfection 1200U and U-Photo scanners. I don't know if the Perfection 1200S (SCSI) is also supported. It includes a WIA driver, a TWAIN interface for use with twain compatible software and also a stand-alone scanning utility to scan directly to files. Note that the stand-alone Epson Scan utility will NOT run if the scanner is not turned on. This scanning interface isn't the identical to Epson Twain 5 but the functionality seems to be pretty much the same.

That's that. There are other methods for installing this scanner in Windows 7/Vista but these two at least conform to KISS.

If OTOH you're up to modifying installation files yourself there are some other installation methods discussed at the links below.

Thanks for this. I was about to throw out my Perfection when I did one last search and found it. And it works!

What about installing for Windows 8 64 bit?  I tried the epsonScan_1.0_Per1200Win64eu.zip setup and all seemed to go well.  Then, after rebooting, I plugged in and turned on the Epson 1200U scanner and installation began, but hung up about half-way through.  I closed that and then used Device Manager to see that the scanner was listed as "other devices" with no driver.  I tried "update driver" and Windows found a driver but quit because "The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information".  So, how do I proceed?

@johnsnla
I had the same problem and I solved it.
In windows 8 the non verified drivers are by default not installable.
This setting can be changed, see: http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/
After having changed this setting you will be able to install the driver.
Good luck!

Worked well in win 8; however, after I upgraded to 8.1, it disappeared.  I uninstalled and then re-installed and then ran "Epson Scan" and received "EPSON Scan cannot be started.  Please use the Troubleshooting Assistant to solve the problem."  No help there.  I've enabled (again) installation of non-verified drivers, but this time, when I try to update the driver, I get "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.  Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.  Epson Perfecdtion 1200. The system cannont find the file specified."  So, how do I make this work again?

For the last year I'd relied on my old Windows XP desktop to run my Perfection 1200.  Well, the old XP machine finally died today, and initially I believed the game was over for the old scanner too.  One final check for a Windows 7 driver brought me to these instructions.  Thank you!

I was about to give up on my Perfection 1200U Photo ever working again until I found this.  It may be 12 years old, but it's an excellent scanner and it now works great on my Windows 7/64 bit machine.  Many thanks.

I am hopeful that you will know if this fix will work for Windows 8.1. I did download something earlier to help with Windows 7 and it worked fine, but new situation now and still have the old (good) scanner.

thanks so much.

Although I've had Win8.x (64bit) for quite a while now I don't like it much, so I haven't tried to install the scanner (or much of anything else) in it yet. At the moment I don't even have a space to sit my scanner so that I can hook it up and use it.  Could be a while before I do get around to trying it in that OS but if I do succeed I will post about it here.

Meanwhile, the link below describes a method on how to install unsigned drivers in Windows 8.1.

http://revryl.com/2013/08/06/install-unsigned-drivers/

Note that I haven't tried this myself so this is not a recommendation. I'm just pointing out an option that can be tried. At least one of the commenters on that page claims to have gotten his Epson 1200 running in Windows 8.1 by using the described procedures. Unfortunately they didn't specify whether it was a 32bit or 64bit Windows version.
