"Your device is offline. Please sign in with the last password used on this device." error message on entering the password at login screen when not connected to interent on Windows 10.

Original title: Password Windows 10

I set up my computer with a login password.  At some point I did something so that my computer's login password migrated with my msn account, so my original password was no good and my new login password is the same as my msn.com account.

The problem is I switched internet providers recently, and as a result lost internet connectivity to my computer and when I try to log on to my computer using my msn.com account the prompt responds with "Your device is offline.  Please sign in with the last password used on this device."

So I retype the same password (the msn.com password) because it was the last one used on the device and the prompt repeats.

I've tried the original password as well, but that does not work either.

It sounds like the forums that upgraded from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10, but this pc is Windows 10 only.

Anyone else have this issue?

Hello,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused and will assist you in resolving the issue.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

  1. Are able to login into your Microsoft account using the browser?
  2. Did you check if similar issue persists when the PC is placed in Safe mode?

You may be facing the above issue due to some of the system components corrupted or missing on your PC. Logging into safe mode will help in diagnosing if the issue is caused due to any of the faulty, incompatible or corrupted device driver installed on the PC.

I suggest you to check if similar issue persists if the PC is booted into Safe mode.

Safe mode is a diagnostic mode that starts your computer with limited drivers necessary to run Windows. The words Safe Mode appear at the corners of your monitor to identify which Windows mode you are using.

Expand the options to boot into Safe Mode:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/troubleshoot-black-screen-problems

Reboot the PC to exit from Safe mode.

To know more about Safe mode, following is an article on Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode) (Applies to Windows 10 also):

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

Refer to the link below on similar issue and check if it helps:

Write to us with the answers to the above questions and the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

Thank you.

I am able to sign into my microsoft account.

I cannot enter the PC into safe mode through the boot process as described in the instruction you linked.  I downloaded the usb version onto an external hard drive and plugged it into the computer, then booted the computer and went to the bios, but there is no option to boot from usb device.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

Do you have any other administrator User Accounts on the computer?

You need an Internet Connection for the new password to be synced. I suggest you to try connecting a wired Internet connection and check if it works.

Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with an updated status of the issue so that we can assist you further.

I have the same issue as the original poster. Here are my answers to the questions you asked.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

  1. Are able to login into your Microsoft account using the browser? Yes, I can login to my Live account from the browser on another computer.
  2. Did you check if similar issue persists when the PC is placed in Safe mode? I cannot login using Safe mode. My password does get validated when using the command prompt.

This solution: http://www.kapilarya.com/your-device-is-offline-please-sign-in-with-the-last-password-used-on-this-device did not work for me. My registry does not seem to have this key

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\StoredIdentities

IdentityCRL cannot be seen or is not present in my registry.

I have this same issue. This computer was linked to a deleted account. Even after reactivating the dormant account, I still have this issue.

I had the very same issue, and after hours of frustration (attempting to follow a range of answers online - all of which were unsuccessful), I managed to find a very simple solution.

Firstly, this is how the problem occurred to begin with. I had become used to signing in with a pin (rather than my password) and I forgot my password. I needed to access my Microsoft Account on another device (my home laptop), so I did so by changing my password on my home device (to one I could remember).

My work device requires my Microsoft Account password in order to sign in to my computer (something Microsoft recommends when you install Windows 10). However, for whatever reason, my work device had detected that my password had changed, but would not recognise the new password I had created. When trying to sign in, I was continually faced with the message:

"Your device is offline. Please sign in with the last password used on this device."

My immediate thought was to connect to Wifi (as you have that option at the sign-in screen). But I could not connect to any Wifi connection. I tried resetting, turning off and on, and attempting to connect to Wifi again. Nothing worked. I tried all the passwords I could think of, I even tried the last gmail password I had used (in some desperate sort of hope) - all to no avail.

Naturally, I searched the internet for advice (on my mobile). Many people advised I run a Command Prompt through the boot menu (by holding 'Shift+Reset' at the sign-in screen). But because I couldn't sign-in with my password when attempting to run the Command Prompt (and it does ask you for this just before you can launch it), my computer wouldn't recognise me as the administrator, so that didn't work either! Therefore, I could enter none of the very complex (for me at least) commands, which a plethera of 'experts' recommended online.

Finally I entered a Microsoft Help Chat, and I was given a solution (though I need to clarify each step below). This will save you much time and effort, and no doubt preserve your sanity.

Now, here's what I did in order to completely solve the problem. It was very, very simple.

1. I changed my Microsoft Account password to one I now knew (so if you haven't done this, do this on another device! It's rather straightforward, and will only take 2mins).

2. I then connected my computer to a router with an ethernet cable (creating a wired connection), and turned my Wifi 'off' at the sign-in screen, so my wired ethernet connection was the only connection.

3. I entered my new Microsoft Account password (created on another device). And... it took a while to sign-in, but I now had access to my computer again! (What a relief!)

THEN, and most importantly:

4. I opened the start menu.

5. I selected 'settings'.

6. I selected 'accounts'.

7. I then selected 'create an local/offline login'

You have to create a username and password here, but basically by doing this you can opt-out of using your Microsoft Account to sign in to your computer. It will completely prevent any chance of this happening again! Just make sure it's a password you can remember, and that your password hint is a good one!

I hope this helps anyone who has found themselves in a situation similar to mine. The whole thing was rather frustrating, especially as I only have Wifi at work (I work at a university) so I had to take my device to a friend's house to use his wired connection. But it solved the problem completely for me, and prevented it ever happening again!

You really don't have to worry.

When you are on your sign in screen and you have a smartphone then connect your smartphone to your computer with a USB cable and turn USB tethering on. You can do this by going into your mobile's settings/personal hotspot/usb tethering. Now if you have connected your mobile with your pc before then it will recognise your device and connect to the Internet. That's it now just enter your PIN/password and hit enter.

Wait for a few seconds and your Windows homescreen will be in front of you.

Make sure your device has a network connection.

I'm 1000% sure this will work because I tried it myself on my pc.
