Mail (outlook 2013) setup in control panel will not open on Surface Pro 2

I've been trying to configure my outlook to connect with my work exchange account. I'm unable to do so through the outlook 2013 program and clicking on the control panel/mail (outlook 2013) (32 bit) icon brings up no window to configure an account. I managed to get my exchange account set up in the mail app but I'm not interested in using the mail app when i should be able to utilize all the functionality of outlook.

I tried uninstalling office 365 and the mail app thinking i'd clean install the 64-bit version of office but to no avail. Looks like the preloaded office 13 cannot be uninstalled. This is driving me crazy. Every other program I have had zero issues with; autocad, revit, adobe suite, everything runs perfect. I just want to get my outlook all set up so i can continue to rant and rave about this beautiful tablet to my less fortunate friends. Please advise!

Thanks!

Ok so here's what finally solved this strange problem for me:

PROBLEMS

  • Unable to configure an account through outlook. Given the error  "A new Microsoft Exchange account cannot be manually configure while Outlook is running.  To add a manually configured Account Exit Outlook.  In Control Panel, Open Mail, and then click E-mail Accounts."
  • Clicking the mail (outlook 2013)(32 bit) icon would not bring up the menu to configure any accounts or profiles.
  • Office would not uninstall! Even after uninstalling all office programs and apps I could still open up the entire office suite. Neither the programs and features uninstall list nor the apps list showed anything office related.

SOLUTION

  1. Found a thread that said to use this microsoft fix it utility to uninstall Office: Scoll down a little and click the microsoft fixit icon with the blue hat holding a wrench, run this program once it finishes downloading.
  2. Download the Office 365 installer from your account page and reinstall. VOILA
After this i was able to configure mail accounts and profiles just fine through the control panel

Thanks for checking this Dominic. Let me know how it goes. We're also updating the KB with this info, but if you already have a profile and just need to add an account, you can do that in Outlook > File > Account.

Thanks again for your feedback. I'll update this post when I have more info.
