A circular reference on a file is not allowing me to open the file to fix.

Excel will not open the file, however when I exit, it asks me if I want to save my changes.  

Initially it showed as a circular reference error.  I tried the following, but no success:

 Let me assist you with the issue. Follow the steps mentioned and check if it helps:

  • ·         Click the File, click Options, and then click the Formulas category.
  • ·         In the Calculation options section, select the Enable iterative calculation check box.
  • ·         To set the maximum number of times that Excel will recalculate, type the number of iterations in the Maximum Iterations box. The higher the number of iterations, the more time that Excel needs to calculate a worksheet.
  • ·         To set the maximum amount of change you will accept between calculation results, type the amount in the Maximum Change box. The smaller the number, the more accurate the result and the more time that Excel needs to calculate a worksheet.
  • ·         Click Ok and check if Excel works fine.

To clarify you situation, we need to confirm some information with you.

 

1. The screenshot of the error message.

 

2. Do you need to circular calculate in the workbook? If not, you can try removing the circular reference.

 

3. Are you able to open the file after the circular reference error?

 

4. Please provide the version of the Excel to us. You can check it in File > Account.

Hi Tisky,

1)  I no longer get an error message, but the original message indicated a circular reference error.  After that, it does not open the file, I just have a blank excel screen and any functions from the menus are greyed out.

2)  I cannot correct the problem (not sure how it happened) as I cannot access the file.

3)  The file does not open, or at least it shows me nothing.  When I exit excel it does ask if I want to save changes to the file though.  I checked and it is not in a background tile.

4)  Excel 2013 Office Professional Plus (15.0.4919.1000)
