Transfer gamertag from one microsoft account to another

Hi,

I have a gamertag associated with my microsoft hotmail email account which belongs to my son. I was never an Xbox gamer, so I let my son create and use a gamertag under my account when he was young.

Now he is old enough to have his own email account. So I would like to transfer the gamertag - along with all purchases and game-playing history to his own account.

There are multiple issues with the current setup:

- the gamertag is associated with my name, not his

- since he logs with my account, it is a shared password

How can I go about doing this?

Thanks,

Ashutosh

You can change the primary email associated with the account, But you cannot transfer data or sell the account to someone else. That's against the Xbox code of conduct

Good morning,

You can go here in order to follow a step-by-step guide to change the email address associated with that account. If you have any more questions don't be afraid to ask. Thank you!

Hello there,

If I remember correctly it is quite tricky but it should work.
Log-in to that Microsoft account where you want to change your email.
Add another mail address (microsoft account) as a way to sign-in.
Make that mail primary.
Remove your old email.

This guide should help and provide more information about this topic.
Let me know if it helps.

I'm not sure about the games and purchases, but if you share everything using your Xbox Home that will be fine.

I'll add a little warning, you risk losing your Microsoft account if the current primary email address is one created via a Microsoft service like @live.com @hotmail.com outlook etc by changing emails.

Unfortunately this is not possible and since your email is a Microsoft email (Live, Hotmail or Outlook) you can't switch the email to another one and have the account not be connected to that email anymore, technically.

You can switch the login emails around but you CAN'T switch TO a Microsoft email when you do this (Live, Hotmail or Outlook). You can switch to another email provider but you can't switch between Microsoft emails as they're permanently connected to that account they were created on. For example, you can't switch this account's email login to another Microsoft account because that email is attached to a Microsoft account already.

The only solution is to start over and have him create a new account and have the account that owns all the games to be set as the my home xbox account on the xbox one so that the new account can play all the games that account owns BUT the saves and any progress will not move over and some DLC will not share, also.

Hi areo89,

Thanks for bringing this question to the forums. As previously stated by the Ambassadors, there is not a way to merge accounts, or transfer the information from one profile to another (for further information refer to the support article Microsoft Account on the Xbox console FAQ). The most you can do is attempt to change the email alias that is used for log in to the account, but do be aware that you may lose your Hotmail account should you do so. Bear in mind that the email used for log in is solely an alias and you can leave it as such, since you can also add in other emails for notification and security purposes to the account should you wish to do so.

I hope that this helps a bit more and please let us know the results.

Thanks, all, for the responses.

I added an email alias as described here: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/my-account/microsoft-account/change-email-sign-in-for-microsoft-account - but it doesn't really help, since the account name and passwords are still mine.

I was hoping I could do this since it was within the family - not like I am transferring game purchases to a third party, but understand the current constraints.

Hi there,

To be honest all you need to do in this case is change the primary e-mail on the account from yours to his.  Unfortunately there is no way to account transfer purchases.
