How to change install directory for xbox (beta) app gamepass on pc

If you are like myself and use a modist sized drive for windows and use a larger drive for gaming you generally want to install your games on your storage drive not your boot drive, but as it stands by default when you goto use the xbox beta app it wont allow you to change from its default installed drive.

A easy to fix this is to goto system- then storage- and under the storage tab find " change where new content is saved" then select "new apps will save to" and select your preferred storage drive.

Then uninstall your xbox (beta) app, and reinstall it, now when you goto install a new game on the pc game pass it will give you the option to select what drive you want to install it on.

This issue happens because by default windows needs to recognize that your pc has the folder called windows app on that drive and that it has been setup by a windows app installer atleast once, for the xbox (beta) app to recognize the new (useable) install location for your games and apps

Hope this helps everyone :)

You don't need to do that. On the top right of the app, you can see your profile picture. left click on it, then left click settings. In there, is drive selection, which is a simple drop down where you can select which drive to install too. Hope this helps.

honestly thats the long way around doing it, click your profile picture in the app itself, then click settings, and there is a drop down for drive selection.

This is exactly how I had to get around it.

The Xbox Game Pass Beta app was installing Metro Exodus in the wrong drive (my boot HDD), while I had tried to change the setting to my second drive (game SSD), but it gave me the message "windows is not configured to install new apps into this directory", and gave me the popup to the "settings->storage->default install locations" thing, I changed it to the "game SSD", then realized it was downloading to the HDD.

But I also realized it had created 4 folders inside the SSD:

1) "DeliveryOptimization"

2) "WindowsApps" (which is unbrowseable unless you change folder settings)

3) "ModifiableWindowsApps" (under "program files")

4) "[insert-your-PC-admin-name]"

Metro: Exodus isn't installed yet, but the only folder which doesn't say "empty folder" is the "DeliveryOptimization"..

It has a 2.51MB file listed inside.

Weird stuff man.

But after those folders were created, it was no big deal to select the default install in system settings for my HDD,

Then select the SSD inside the Xbox Beta app.

Soo.. when first installing a game, Click your username in the top corner, select install location, try to change it to your game drive, when it gives you an error click the "change settings" link it gives you highlighted in orange, change the first "install new apps" option to your game drive, then make sure Xbox Beta app will now allow you to set your game drive as the install location and save, then change the setting back in your windows settings to your normal install location.

Then download your game!
