Xbox One won't allow widescreen viewing

For some reason, the Xbox will not play live TV in the widescreen aspect ratio 16:9. It squeezes it to the smaller 4:3 ratio. I checked to make sure it wasn't the TV or Directv box by unplugging the HDMI cable from the Xbox to the Tv and it played normal, but when I plugged it back in it was back to 4:3. It is in widescreen for everything else, just not in live TV mode. Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm having a similar issue, but it only happens when I use my Cable box DVR.  All my recording (recorded in standarded def - not in HD) are 4:3.  I checked my cable box settings along with the Xbox One and they are both set for 1080 16:9.

Checked the link you provided and it's no different from the actual way I setup my Xbox to my Verizon Fios/TV.  I'm still seeing standard def channels (as well as DVR recorded standard def channels) in 4:3 when hooked up to the Xbox, and it's 16:9 when not hooked up to the xbox.

I'm starting to consider unhooking my Xbox from my TV because I don't prefer watching 4:3 on a high def 16:9 capable TV.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but when the TV App is launched and playing, hit the Menu button and change the Display Mode to Stretch. I only had to do this once and now my TV App always launches with this setting set.

I have the same problem and from what ive read so does alot of other people. Dvd will only playback in 4:3 format. With no apparent way of changing it. Ive tried everything, what an oversight , along with the console tv entertainment side being useless here in the uk and the framerate and resolutions not being up to scratch im absolutely let down by Microsoft.  Being an X box fanboy it pains me to say im giving it one more month and if there are no fixes its getting sold. Not as advertised id say.

I am having the same issue but only with the tv from my cable box. I tried passing through my PC and it works in widescreen mode. I would assume then that this is an issue with cable boxes. Still no idea how to fix this. It worked find in widescreen before I did a reset to factory.
