xbox live gold

i just purchased xbox live gold membership straight from xbox live. but when i try playing it is still saying i have the free version.

Double check that your account gold account https://commerce.microsoft.com (something could have hiccuped and the transaction didn't go through). If everything is good and it says you're account is gold, test your network connection.

Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.

Select Network Settings.

Select your wireless network name if you are prompted to do so.

Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

That should get everything synced up.
