it says that my account has xbox live gold but when I go on my xbox and try doing something that I need xboxlive gold it says I don't have it...
Well the positive news is your forum profile also says you have Gold, so you look all set.
Now let's force the update through on the Xbox.
The easiest and quickest way to do this is through a Network Connection Test.
Steps to do so:
If that does not work, the other trick is to delete the profile (PROFILE ONLY, not profile and items) and re-download it, an explanation of which can be found here:
