Xbox app freeze on launch

Hi all!

I am having an issue with one of my computers, of course the main one. I could not reproduce anything using half a dozen other computers.

Whenever i launch the Xbox App, i get a loading screen that keeps loading.

It worked exactly once on this computer a few months back, and never again.

I have been running insider builds since late may (i think), and this happened right from the beginning (while it did not happen on my Surface Pro 2 and a Mac Pro that received both all the same builds and were updated to win10 even before my main rig).

I manually uninstalled the xbox app through powershell, then reinstalled with the store with no change of behaviour.

I also restored the original files from my build (from 10525, i had two folders : Microsoft.XboxApp_5.6.17000.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe and Microsoft.XboxApp_2015.617.130.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe that i restored to windowsapps) then restored builtin apps using the reinstall script from here, the app updated fine from the store after that but still unable to do anything inside.

I'm using a computer that is joined to my own domain. I also added my MS account separately to this machine and tried with this new account but got exactly the same issue, so it is not related with how my account is set up on this machine (i have folder redirections that are causing weird issues with some games...).

I tried a "windows 10 to go" drive and it worked fine from it, so not an incompatilibity with my hardware.

I am not really ready to wipe everything yet, and would prefer to find what program i have is preventing me from accessing this app...

Do you guys have any idea?

I have tried to do a little research about this, and find some people are having the same problem. I would just like you to try running some troubleshooting steps to see if they resolve your problem.

First, could you try using the Windows App troubleshooter to see if this can fix the problem with the App freezing and crashing at launch. To run the Windows App troubleshooter, please follow these instructions:

  1. Press the Windows Key and X key together (This will bring a pop up menu above the start option)
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select Views, and Large Icons
  4. Select Troubleshooting
  5. Select Hardware and sound
  6. Select Windows Store Apps
  7. Then follow the on screen instructions to Troubleshoot the Windows store apps.

You could also try an sfc /scannow?

If that method does not work, then I have one more for you to try :) I am going to ask you to reset the Windows Store cache on your device. To do this, please follow these instructions:

  1. Press the Windows Key and R
  2. Type "WSReset.exe" and press enter
  3. After this has finished, and the store's cache has been cleared. You could uninstall the app again, and restart your computer/device
  4. When you have booted up your device again, you can try to install the app again, which should install to the latest build that is out on the market today.

Please let me know how this turns out, if this does not help, then I will try and help you further.

For a start, i am back to RTM build of windows 10, no more insider builds for this computer.

So i am back at build 10240, as most people.

Xbox App still does the same thing.

The "Troubleshoot the Windows store apps" instructions did not go very far, it says right at the beginning that it could not detect any issues.

I also ran an "sfc /scannow" which get also says there is no issues.

To go with the sfc command, i also tried "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth", again no issues.

Wsreset.exe launch the store app along with a black window, which does not close by itself, i let it run for a couple a minutes before closing it.

I just uninstalled the app and will try to reinstall it after a reboot... I'll report what i find.

After reboot (and making sure both folders in program files x86 and localappdata\packages were empty) then reinstall xbox app still freeze when launched... :(

Well to my big surprised the xbox app has worked again exactly once! I opened it and let it run for a few minutes before checking it again. At first there was no spinning wheels on the interface (after the green screen), contrary to when it freezes.

Now it has stopped working as previously...

While it worked i could even stream from my xbox one and play a bit (worked wonderfully btw).

So it is even more frustrating that it, again, no longer works... :(

I have had a look at your posts, in regards to this error you are having. I also managed to translate the sfc /scannow results to English. When you say that the app started working, did you do anything different?

Do you know how fast your internet connection is?

When it was working, did you have any other apps open?

Anything else connected to the network?

Do you know if this happens on other Microsoft Accounts on your device?

While looking, I have noticed that quite a lot of people are having this issue. So I am going to go ahead and escalate this issue up with this thread. Once I have any sort of update for you, I will post back to keep you informed.

Honestly i have no idea about what changed, i tried this morning again after closing almost every applications i have and i could not launch the xbox app.

I would love to hear about other people having this issue, currently i am felling a little lonely... Knowing other people are experiencing the same make me hopeful we will find a solution! ^^

I will try to add my wife's MS account and check if it works with it...

To add more information, actually it looks like the app *does* load eventually!

After waiting for maybe half an hour, i checked the app and it was loaded and working.

It was the same yesterday, i let it run in the background for a long time and eventually i checked it and it was working...

I don't understand why it takes so long though. But it does seem to work in the end...

That is great news. I am guessing this could be down to displaying and downloading all the activity feed and content onto the app for you. How long do you have to leave it until it works as it should?

Hard to say, i have launched it 20 minutes ago and it is still loading very very slowly. Right now i still have one spinning wheels (instead of three at the start) and a bunch of grey sqares under "recents"...

On the other end, i have next to me a Surface Pro 2, connected to the very same accounts as on my desktop. The app loads flawlessly on it, in a matter of a few seconds...

My desktop is not really a slow dog, it has a core i7 3960X running at 4.5, 16gb of ram, and win10 is running from a Samsung 840 pro...

And from my windows to go drive, the app works also perfectly on the same hardware...

EDIT : keeping up with how long it takes is quite hard, i don't have (yet) multiscreen on this machine, so the app is in the background and i don't keep checking it... Obviously once i have my multiscreen setup in place it would be easier to drop the app on one screen on continue using the computer on the others...

EDIT 2 : app is loaded, again, about half an hour...
