What does installing a game do?

When i go to the game library and i press on the game, it says to play it or install it...what does it do when you install a game? Really, ive been thinking of what it does...

Basically: It reduces wear and tear on the hardware because the disc doesn't spin which reduces heat and noise, less chance of games being destroyed.

You still need the disc to prevent piracy (renting a game, installing and returning it)

Also running on the HDD is much faster then basic disc read.
