The Volus nuisance

Is it a common glitch for the volus shield boost to make it impossible to do anything but move?  Its happened to me frequently lately.

Also, and the point of this thread, has anybody been noticing there to be way too many volus characters lately who play field medic and always have a ridiculously low score.  As in they are so busy playing medic that they don't really help kill anything.  This is great in theory, but I think I'd rather just have a fourth teammate with a gun.  Two of our squad went down on firebase white gold, I was one of them, so I was stuck in that watching your teammate run around the map in circles limbo for a while.  One teammate was going head to head with a banshee and a few other random enemies while the Volus ran near him and kept hitting the restore shield button.  The volus didn't fire a single shot.

I was wondering when a anti Volus thread would appear here...

.

The Volus characters are quite useful and when specced properly, can deal a lot of damage. Yes, Shield Boost is useful, but the other abilities make them a all round character. Recon Mine and Biotic Orbs, can inflict a lot of damage, in a short time. What it comes down to, is that some people don't know how to use them effectively... hence why a lot of people hate Volus and will kick them from the lobby.

.

On the other hand, because of those people, legitimately good Volus players suffer, by being kicked and or verbally berated by other teammembers.

I dont kick volus. Volus is normally a class that doesnt score high. I mean he cant even see over a wall so how do you expect him to say snipe a whole wave down? He doesnt because that is not his role. He is a natural medic, small and the ability to go invisible for a short time so he can get in help his team mate up and get out. I have played all 4--------

100 waves each and I think I only outscored the rest of the team once. Maybe im not as good at volus as Deaths head but I never ever see the volus on the top of the scoreboard.

[/quote]I've encountered the impossible to do anything but move glitch on multiple occasions where shield boost is nowhere to be found. Not sure what the cause could be it just seems to iron itself out either at the beginning of the next wave or if I do something quirky to make my character "un-glitch" if that's at all possible.

As for the effectiveness of Volus in general?

I still don't understand this notion that the Volus is not helpful and thus should be booted from the lobby immediately. That's not directly replying to what you've said above of course I'm just speaking in general because it's happened to me more than one time in the past where I'll change to either the Volus Adept or Engineer in the lobby and I get booted immediately afterwards for whatever reason. I've asked for an explanation as to why and the one time I got a response was simply because I switched to a volus in a lobby full of 3 soldiers; 2 Destroyers and 1 Turian Havoc.

I think some people just really undervalue the usefulness of the Volus and its abilities. Sure some people seem to go way overboard with being a field medic as you say and probably should instead focus more on doing damage to the enemy all the while popping that shield boost at the correct times, but as BAD 2020 stated that's how the Volus inherently are. When I play my Volus Engineer I will be a field medic so to speak when need be by using Shield Boost on certain objective waves like escort where it's obvious we'll be traversing through heavy enemy activity (most of the time) and the squads shields are bound to go down repeatedly, but I'll also be covering flanks with Recon/Proxy mines and taking down shields with my Geth Plasma SMG that occasionally I'll get kills with.

Same story with the Adept, just instead of the SMG providing the dps I utilize the Biotic Orbs which is basically having multiple Warps that can decimate one or a group of enemies in little time when you can combine it with Stasis.

I normally play Silver so of course matter of opinion for me is different towards the effectiveness of using any of the Volus characters as compared to those who play on Gold/Platinum, but I certainly still don't think their a nuisance or not helpful. The player makes the character, so if they seem like a nuisance then they're probably a nuisance with other characters as well.

You can have the most amazing character class available to virtually anyone but if someone just doesn't know how to use them correctly they can be the worst teammate you've ever encountered and I'm sure most everyone has encountered someone like that who you obviously can tell they aren't familiar with how to use the class and it shows.

Just my lengthy .02

I will say that 2 volus on the same team can be a bit annoying to me. its like its ok little guy your buddy just healed me.

I had one of them who it seemed was creepily stalking me the entire match.  lol.  Every few seconds, he would heal me.  I couldn't move any direction w/o bumping him and wondering why I was stopping.  That's the other thing.  I always trip over the little guys when I'm trying to fight.  lol

I know there are good players and bad players.  It wouldn't bother me if it didn't result in heavier enemy pressure.  Sometimes, I need help.  And by sometimes, I mean every difficulty but bronze.

I've never experienced the issue where you couldn't move as a result of a Volus using Shield Boost.  But based on my hosting matches as a Volus, they're absolutely awesome when all other 3 squad members are laying down the hurt; its amazing how quickly your group can mop up the opposition and be "almost" unkillable  :)  While their short stature may be a blessing because it eliminated the issue with the run function accidentally made you take cover when all that you wanted to do was keep on running away, they cannot mantle jump (hop over cover) making navigating certain maps annoying, forcing the player to take alternate routes.  And yeah, Volus don't score very high in the post game stats, as they're naturally Field Medics as the Krogan are naturally Tanks.

I haven't been booted from a room when I pick Volus characters. I use guns that pack a serious punch with my Volus so when I'm not healing I can tear through the enemy.

-

With the Volus Adept I use the Viper or Indra with Stasis and headshots. I throw Biotic Orbs mainly for bad situations or Boss enemies or set off biotic explosions from my teammates.

-

The Volus Mercenary is my super support class so I use the Reeger Carbine or Pirahna and stick close to teammates. I let the Drone get on the enemies nerves.

-

With the Volus Engineer I use the Scorpion with Magazine mod and the Heavy barrel mod. Scorpion+Proximity Mine+Recon Mine is no joke. My Scorpion is only lv3 too. This Volus is the only character that I can consistently get 1st or 2nd with but that depends on how much field medic I have to play and whether or not I'm forced to run around the entire map the whole time.

As for "kicking people out", I don't do it because it is mean and rude.  When I host, I welcome all players (since I primarily play on Bronze for public matches.  I gave up on Silver because people who play on Bronze instantly quit, and I don't blame them because I understand from when I did the same thing when starting out in this game due to the matchmaking placing players looking for Bronze into Silver, or higher matches) and I stick around longer when I see players with N7 Ranks below 20 as I'm returning the favor for all of those awesome players who gave me the chance to learn the ropes when the roles were reversed (my N7 Rank is only 240 because promoting characters is really annoying since I have to re-level them back-up to level 20 is aggrevating to me; since I already know what builds I want to use).  If I am forced to "Kick somone out" (regardless if I'm the host or not), I simply leave because I don't want any part of it (kicking someone out).  Don't get me wrong, I completely understand why people get "kicked out" during N7 Weekend Operations where the squad needs to be composed of a specific kit to get the Commendation Pack, but I still don't support it.  I mean, what if that player hasn't been able to unlock that specific Kit yet?  Given the randomness of the store, getting what you want is difficult.  Yes, I agree that the other 3 players using that specific kit need to get that player out of there as their presence will negate the Commendation Pack, but in unique situations like kit specific operations, the person getting kicked out shouldn't take it personally.  In the events where there is no specific kit required to achieve the Commendation Pack, please don't take it personally also, just look for another lobby.  Sorry if I seem like a "softy", but that is just the way that I am  :)

My "Volus Adept" is maxed out at 22.50% extra weapons damage (from Volus Training) and my 4 Biotic Orbs grant me +15 faster cooldown time each.  This is really important because he is equipped with a Phaeston X (Assault Rifle Extended Barrel V and Assault Rifle Stability Damper V) and it drops his base Power Recharge Speed down to +145%  Hence, I still get my +200% Power Recharge Speed and I get to spam out Shield Boost while shredding through my enemies  :)  He has max shields/health and can more than hold his own on the field  :)

I have my Volus Adept with the following specs:

.

Stasis: Up to level 3

Biotic Orbs: Lv 4A (Damage), 5A (Damage), 6B (Orb Count)

Shield Boost: Lv 4B (Shields), 5B (Regeneration), 6B (Protection)

Volus Training: Lv 4B (Damage & Capacity, 5B (Shield Boost)

Fitness: Lv 4B (Durability), 5B (Shield Recharge)

.

Take as Primary a Phalanx X with Piercing Mod V and Pistol Heavy Barrel V. Secondary, Geth Plasma SMG X with SMG Ultralight Materials V and SMG High-Velocity Barrel V. With these specs and weapon loadout, not only can I be a field medic if need be, but also hold my own damage wise.
