The "1 Free Month of Xbox Live Gold"

I have been trying to get the one month trial and I keep recieving the error code 80070057. Along with the message: "Can't retrieve information from Xbox Live. Please try again later."

Is this because you have to have a credit card connected to your live account? If so than this isn't really free, it's just a ruse to steal money from me in hopes that I'll forget to cancel and that it's on auto-renewal. If anyone has any insight into this, it would much appreciated if you can help me out with this c:

Hi there,

you need a valid payment option attached because it is a subscription, the first month is free.

Some additional info about turning off auto renewall:

How is it a ruse? You still get the first month for FREE. And once you create the account you can then go to the billing website or call phone support and have them turn off auto renewal so you don't have to worry about doing it later before the 30 days are up. I joined Netflix last year and they said they had a 30 day trial offer but I still had to give my card details. They also had a disclaimer stating that if I cancel before the 30 days then I would not be billed at a recurring rate of $7.99/month. Fair deal both ways. MS isn't the only company to offer a trial period for FREE and then require credit/debit card details at sign up.

Also when you do sign up you have to use a valid credit/debit card. If you try to use a dead one it won't work as they verify the account.

As WPAK and Temhotabot mentioned, you will need a debit or credit card on file in order to get the free month. And this as long as you cancel your automatic renewal before the 30 days is up, you will not have a risk of getting charged again after the trial is over. Simple.
