Someone is cheating?

How do I know someone is cheating on xbox live?

For example, in GTA IV there is the machine gun. I have been shot from a very long distance (let's say a block and a half, or to the point that you have to manually aim for your bullets to reach the player), in like 1.5 seconds with 2 bullets. Bam bam. My character died (and I had full health without armor!). How is that possible? First of all, it takes more shots than that to kill a character and I have tried shooting from that range with a machine gun and you just can't kill someone like that.

Anyway in general, how do I know gamers are using cheats/hacks/mods/glitches/turbo boost controllers (other than the obvious glitches)  in a game?

Sometimes it's really hard to tell.

Any ideas?

Thanks

GTA is full of cheating and modding OP. But just because someone can do something you cant does not mean they cheat.
If you suspect someone of cheating report them, it will be investigated and if they cheat action will be taken. Just try not to report just anyone because they beat you or did something you might find difficult.

As far as knowing 100% you just have to wing it and trust your judgement. If all else fails just set them as avoided players, that at least lowers the chances you will play them again.

I do not understand that. How can Microsoft allow games to be cheated on? Is there no kick-on-cheat-detected system? I have heard about a score-resetting system.

How can it be that they allow people to use cheats/mods in a LIVE game?

I would logically figure that these things would not be possible but would rather be moderated/patched..

Just very odd to me..

Its not MS's responsibility to patch games, they can and will ban cheats and modders daily but that is as far as their job goes.

The games developers are the people who need to support their products and prevent modding from happening. But sadly some do not bother.

The onus is on the developers to fix their games. All MS can do is ban people (which is done), they can't go in and fix someone else's game for them.

Ok, understandable. However, I was referring to a system that actually detects people using glitches/cheats. Would it not be programmatically very easy to detect if someone is cheating?

That would be extremely difficult to implement for thousands of titles but it would be nice.
Its why we have been given the reporting function I think OP. As gamers we generally do not tolerate cheats so we help to keep them off LIVE, if only for a time until they make a new account.

Oh I have an idea: ban their console if they cheat twice. Anyway, I have read that Microsoft has implemented the anti-cheating feature in the form of: permanently change the player's motto to 'I am a dirty cheater' and gamertag to CheatdirtyCheat. Funny.

Sorry OP means original poster :). Its the lazy way instead of writing someones full tag :P.

Well people get a cheater stamp on their profile for life if they get a GS correction, but as far as I know that's the only time they get one at the moment.

The problem is large sections of the community demand draconian action but then complain when said draconian action is taken.
