second (offline) profile

I'm the only person registered to my console set up on XBox live, but my wife / daughter both have their own offline only profiles used for playing games.

When one of these profiles is signed in, many of the XBLA games I own show up as trial games,rather than full versions.

 

However, when I use my profile, load up the game, and then sign myself out / sign one of them back in, they immediately start playing the full version.

Any ideas why this happens / if it can be fixed?

It sounds as if you bought those games on another console. Visit http://www.xbox.com/drm and follow the instructions to make them 'belong' to your current console. You may have to set them to download again but don't worry, since they are on your console all that will be downloaded are the new licenses.

that was my immediate thought, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the case.

My original Xbox broke a while back, at which point I brought a new one, and ran the licence transfer tool.  I did not subsequently make any puchases on the broken one.

The link you gave me is also showing only one console attached to my profile.

Any other ideas?

Have you tried downloading them again since running the license transfer tool? That should refresh the license and enable them to be used on the other profiles.

 

That is what I had to do just last week after getting a new console for my birthday.

I tried using the 'unlock trial game' feature directly from the second profile, and then received the 'not signed into Live' error message.

I haven't tried redownloading directly to the main profile though, so that might be worth a try, given it's only an issue with one game at this stage and shouldn't take too long.

It'll have to be done with the account that purchased the game. Once done though all should be well for the second profile to use it.

Go to your DOWNLOAD HISTORY and redownload the content, as stated above it will only take a few seconds for each item. It sounds like you did the license transfer but did not redownload everything afterwards. One way to test it is to disconnect from the internet with your account, or the one that purchased the content, and try using it. Is it showing up as trial version or full version? If showing as trial you need to redownload as stated from your DOWNLOAD HISTORY.
