Resident Evil 5 - Offline Cooperative Play

This is my first Xbox and I'm having some issues getting started with playing games.  I'm trying to play Resident Evil 5 in Offline Cooperative Play.  I'm guessing that I choose "Play Game" from the menu screen and then select "New Game."  Once the game starts I believe the second player needs to hit their "start" button which then brings both players to the Item Management screen.  Both players then hit the A button and start the game in split screen mode.

My question is this:  every time I go to play this game it says I don't have anything set up for saving the game.  It then asks me to select a save device which in my case is the Xbox hard drive.  I don't have any USB sticks in the USB ports.  The only place I could save a game is the Xbox hard drive.  Is there a way to make this happen automatically without my having to select it every time I want to play a new game?

Also, when playing in Offline Cooperative Play, is all of the game information for both players characters saved under 1 of the two profiles being used or does each players profile have game saved information for just their character?

When I want to continue playing where I left off  do I just select "Continue" from the Game Mode?  Will it automatically recognize both controllers being active (assuming they are at the time I hit the "Continue" selection) and put me in split-screen mode (Offline Cooperative Play) at my last saved location or does the second player still have to hit the start button to bring both players back to the Item Management screen before the game will enter into split screen mode?

If you select new game it will always ask you to select a storage device, most titles will do this regardless of what devices are attached. To make sure they are saved in the correct place. The game has no way f detecting where you want to save or how many devices are attached.

But when you select continue game it will not ask you as the save already exists.

It is a while since I played but from what I remember the data is saved to player 1. Again I recall it was like this because player 2 seemed to be little more than a mule to carry items.

Continue should begin the game from where you left off the last time you saved your progress. And the second player will need to sign in on the management screen or the one before.
Sorry this is a little vague but its been a long time.
