redeeming code

Hope someone can help, I was always paying for my Xbox live every month by credit card,but was given a 12  month subscription as a gift so I logged into my Microsoft account to cancel my payment but it tells me that I never had subscription to cancel. So I cancelled my card to stop any further payments. I tried to put in the code on my Xbox but it won't take it because it says I have an outstanding balance to pay, but I can't pay it because they still say ive never had a subscription in the first place!!! Aahhhhhh but I've just noticed that my Xbox gamer tag is different from the gamer tag on the Microsoft account??
