Question: Broken console but the memory is OK...

My Xbox 360 250Gb console is broken but the memory is OK.

I want to buy a replacement so can I just buy the cheaper 4Gb version and fit the 250Gb memory into the slot at back of the console?

Thanks for your help.

If the broken console is also a Slim, then yes you can just transfer the hard drive onto a new console. If it's one of the older 360's then you can't.

Thanks Smwutches. Yes it's a 'slim' and just out of guarantee.

I take it that when I buy a new 4gb console (possibly tomorrow) then insert the existing 250Gb memory none of my data will be lost?

No your data won't be lost.  Just be aware that with a 4gb console, you will be prompted for which storage space to use each time.  It's a little annoying at first and can't be fixed but you'll get used to it.
