Minecraft XBox One joining issues

My friend and I made a survival map and built stuff. The whole nine yards. I've been having problems being kicked out due to connection error intermittently. It was never too much of a problem until this morning. I disconnected trying to build a support beam underwater and that was the last thing I was doing. So I'm not sure if I'm dead or it glitched me into narnia or what not. Every time having tried to reset both our  Minecraft games, X Box Ones, and the internet modem, it still gives me the same results- "connection failed, failed to connect to host". No matter what we did, it won't let me join his game. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Edit: Both of our Nat-types are Open.

Can you join and play other games with that friend?

Sadly NAT isn't the only thing that dictates who you can / can't play with.
