How does body armor work in the game?

I've noticed that when I shoot someone in body armor, the armor icon comes up and it seems to take a little extra to put them down.  But when I pick up armor, it doesn't seem to do me much good.  How much damage is the armor supposed to absorb?  Does it only work well with less powerful bullets, like those fired from pistols and SMGs?

agreed.   I want a ballistic vest made out of the leaves from the tree or electric cables in mission.   Since those take out stingers.... i should be pretty much able to take a good couple of major hits w/minor damage.

Really sucks when I shot someone in the head who is wearing BV and they still don't go down.

Yeah, that happened to me earlier, must've hit him in the head with around 6 bullets but he wouldn't drop.

I only find it useful in hardcore personally. Then it takes 2 bullets compared to 1

The only thing I find that a BV does is obscure my vision. I sometimes pick them up anyway just to give the guy his 15XP or whatever it is :)

Yeah,  I'll do that too.  I stopped selecting it for my own support item since I noticed most players won't even bother to pick them up (don't like standing in place that long to put it on or don't think it does enough good to bother).

According to CoD Wiki...

The vest itself has 50 Health. Although, the vest can resist up to 100 damage.

If enough damage is taken, the vest will be destroyed, reverting the player back to 100 maximum health, so caution should be taken even with the vest. When damaging a player wearing a vest, a ballistic vest icon will appear under the hitmarker.

I can't link from iPhone but watch "Driftor's" MW3 in depth video on YouTube. If I remember rightly it's something pretty close to what Kanaye said.

it works with all guns the same just gives you more time to react but not that much

Oh, I thought OPie was talking about Spec Ops. My mistake. Carry on, people.
