Halo and Halo 2 compatability

I decided to play Halo & Halo 2 again (to refresh myself on the story) and neither would play. My console recognizes the disc, but when i press A to play, it tells me;

 

Game Error

The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again.

 

I've followed the directions listed at http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/8/t/25.aspx and have still had no luck getting these titles to work.

A solution would be greatly appreciated:)

I take it you have a hard drive? If so where did you buy it? The 360 console requiires an official hard drive to play original Xbox games, if your hard drive is not official -i.e you purchased a cheap drive from eBay, then your original games will not load, regardless of whether you have the latest updates or not.

i did. i bought a 250g before MS sold them alone without a special edition elite. so if i were to use the 20g that came with my 360 back in the day i can play?

The 20 gb drive will work fine for you if the 250 gb drive you have is not official.

right, ok. now my 20g that came with it has been formatted (for use as external storage via the usb transfer cable) so i cleared the movies i had saved to it, swapped it with the 250 up top and now the only memory it recognizes is the 4g thumbdrive containing my profile..  and when i try the game again it says

Original xbox game

You need to attach an Xbox 360 Hard Drive to play original Xbox games.

is there a way i can get this hdd to read? or did i inadvertently remove some vital, unreplaceable file upon formatting it?

Uh oh, sounds like you didn't use an official transfer cable.  An official Microsoft transfer cable will not format the drive because it's already been formatted for use with the xbox.  Looks like your stuck with getting a new hard drive entirely.  Check your local gaming stores to see if they have a used 20 gb drive.

dang:( would it be possible to copy system files from a friends legit drive? ill try anything free before spending money haha

sorry, that won't work.  The system files on your friends drive are linked to his box.  You're going to just have to bite the bullet and get the new hard drive.

Even if we knew how to restore your hard drive, we couldn't tell you on here.  That would be considered a mod and talking about such things here is strictly forbidden. Sorry.

no worries. yeah ill either get a new drive or try to find my xbox alpha or wait for Combat Evolved Aniversary. and hope they redo Halo 2 for 360 too haha.
