External disk drive?

My console won't read any of my discs except for Halo: Reach and GoW3 and even when they do get read it's usually not until i spend 30 minutes opening the disc tray and rotating the disc slightly and closing the tray until it finally gets read but it stays in "reading" for about a minute until it says stuff like "play dvd" "open tray" "mixed cd" (or something like that) all while i'm only trying to play a game and I've just gotten bored with dealing with it and I would like to know if an external disk drive would be able to read my games and allow me to play the game through that.

Please help :)

I think my xbox is too old for me to even want to repair it... I might just buy a new box in a few months, but i would still like to know if the external disk drive would help read discs

I know you have RROD ( sorry :/ ) but I am answering to provide some info on your question.

To begin with, XBOX will only allow a 17GB partition on any external USB Hard disk, no matter its size. If you managed somehow to install the game on Hard Disk with no read errors, then you could play it even if your DVD drive was not performing correctly. Big IF here though. Usually the solution is the way to the service.
