It depends on what you are playing. But you don't necessarily have to watch it download. If you have "background downloads" turned on (somewhere in system settings) it'll download in "low power" mode when you turn off the machine. Or, just let it resume when you're done playing.

"Play something else" then? Like I said, it depends on the game. You should be able to play Hexic, I think. Most single-player-only things, Gears of War, probably not, but I can't promise that. I'm sure, somewhere on the interwebs, there's a list of what games support it, but I don't have a URL for you off-hand.

I know for sure that games that have "drop in player" support like the Crackdown games, and probably the LEGO games, wouldn't have it, because they're using a little bit of bandwidth to "listen."

The background download option, I forget exactly which settings screen it's on, but if you have any "unfinished" downloads that the time you shut down the console, the XBox will go into a "low power mode" which, really, is just, no video output, or audio. It's basically "just enough to download." When it's running, you'll see your power button flash every 10 seconds or so? I've never really timed it.

Anyway, it'll keep just enough hardware active to finish out your download. When complete, it'll shut down completely. So, it's good to maybe kick off a big download before you go to bed.  Should be done by the time you get up in the morning.
