... a $200 value, only $19.99!!!!!!

You're forgetting the 800 number here.

Jokes aside, all this stuff is legitimately free. I'm impressed.

so what's the part of Elite that you have to pay for?

It's been confirmed that being subscribed to Elite lets you have the DLC map packs at no additional charge.

Other than that, i don't know.

If it's a monthly subscription basis and that's the only bonus, then it would only make sense to be subscribed at the time of the map pack release.  I assume they'll put the kibosh on that option, but if you have to be subscribed for so long then the price would have to be cheaper than just paying out of pocket for the maps.

I'm curious to see what else they'll be offering to make the subscription worth it since they've said they won't be adding anything to give subscribers an advantage over those who aren't.

I'm assuming that you'll have to pay a lump sum at the time of subscription/renewal.

They're not going to let you just pay month by month.

So, it's unlikely that you can just sign up when a map pack comes out and save money.

Somehow I think that's a last-minute change due to pressure from gamers and a reaction to bf3 announcing a similar service for freee.  Otherwise they would have gone out of their way to get this out before now.

First off, this was announced to be free literally as dice released that info, so they had to have planned it before. Corporations are large, slow machines. They can't make changes that quick.

It is possible that they made more stuff free after the initial reaction though.
