cant use my xbox live gold

i just bought xbox live gold but on my xbox it says xbox live free but on your memberships it says xbox live gold but when i try to play online it says my account is not allowed to

When you add gold on the site it can take a while to populate the account.  If you still aren't showing as gold, simply go to System Settings on the xbox then Network and do a connection test.  When you are able to log back in you should be showing as a gold member.
