As you have discovered Halo 3 requires a hard drive to run and unfortunately the 4gb internal storage in a Slim isn't recognised as such.

The solution is to purchase a new hard drive, however you'll have to get a 250gb for the Slim as the ones for the old model 360 do not fit. http://support.xbox.com/en-gb/pages/xbox-360/how-to/storage.aspx

A possible resolution however would be to try it with a USB Flash Drive, up to a maximum of 16gb, which can be configured on the console to act as a storage device. This works for Halo Reach and the 4gb Slim, so it is possible that it will do the same for Halo 3.

This is how to configure USB http://support.xbox.com/en-gb/Pages/xbox-360/how-to/usb-flash-drive.aspx

No lol the USB flash drive will not do what they want to do which is  play coop

Due to the cacheing required on halo games the maps are huge this can only be done on a hd as flash wouldn't be fast enough for cacheing

The 4 gigs is flash memory not a hd

To play coop on any halo game you need an official xbox hd
