Cannot run original Xbox games on my 360 - Even though I have a hard drive and I am connected to Xbox Live

I recently bought a 250 GB hard drive in order to run Halo, Halo 2, and other original Xbox games on my 360. When I insert the Halo 1 or 2 disc, the machine recognizes the game, but when I try to play it I get an error: "The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." I am connected to Xbox live via a stable wireless connection, and I have not received any updates recently. I have tried updating the 360 using both a disc and a flash drive, as described on the support website, but the machine does not start installing anything after startup, as the website says it should.

Does anybody know what this problem is, or how to fix it?

Thanks!

Even though it's a hard drive, is it an official MS hard drive?

yeah if it is a knock off drive it will most likely NOT have the partition on it that the OEM (factory drives) 250 gig has that enables old xbox game playback.
