Xbox Overheating solution?

My Xbox only overheats on specific games. Battlefield 3, Black Ops, and Black Ops II will all cause overheating. I just now installed BO2 on my hard drive because I heard it would help prevent overheating, and stop the disk from spinning. I still hear the disk spinning though. Is this supposed to happen to a degree?

Hey,

-

After you install a new game (especially ones from 2011 to now) you will hear the disc spin for a while before it stops spinning. I hear them spin for about 5 minutes or so once I boot up a game. That is normal.

he first point in preventing having an overheating Xbox 360 is by keeping the system out of closed off spaces. Wherever possible, ensure that you play with your Xbox 360 in well-ventilated areas. This will have a double effect, it will reduce the heat found in your unit and also help cool air to move inside it..

Additionally dust can be a problem. It is possible for dust to amass inside the Xbox 360 and on the cooling unit and fans. The result is to render the Xbox 360's cooling systems inefficient and in a few instances the cooling systems will stop working due to thye amount of dust in the system.

To resolve this issue, attempt to clean your Xbox 360 both in the interior and exterior whenever possible. One of the miniature vacuum cleaners , used with PC's would be an ideal tool to try. You probably have not considered this to be a problem with any consequence and yet it is a real problem facing Xbox 360 users, and one that can lead to some serious overheating Xbox 360 problems.

If you are able to follow these steps you may well be able to prevent the dreaded ring of death, otherwise you will have one of two choices. Those choices will be to invest in a Xbox 360 repair guide or send it back to Microsoft.

Also, standing it vertical does very much cover its largest vent. cool air needs to get in that vent, and hot air needs to come out. Also perhaps mounting your xbox vertical, with rubber spacers under it is a good idea as it allows for air flow.

Sadly, perhaps it is time to have your console serviced. But to answer you original question, yes the disk should spin for roughly 2-3 minutes before stopping.

I have a question for you ambassadors; Is it possible to open up the xbox to clean the fan, WITHOUT breaking any rules? IF it is, is there any links to "how to"?

I do not want to open my box to clean it, and then get in trouble because I have just cleaned it. And, since I´m not that savvy with that kind of stuff, if it´s ok to open it up to clean it, please, a link how to.

the only rule that will be broken is the guarantee which you will obviously loose. you are allowed to clean you xbox freely but it is recommended not to do it by yourself but any specialized company

I agree, you would lose warranty coverage in case a repair is needed. MS would know the 360 was opened. I keep mine clean by using a micro fiber cloth and a can of compressed air duster. I  use controlled bursts of air from the can on the side vents by spraying across the vents, not into them. I carefully spray the top vent by blowing across it not INTO it. When done, I wipe the console down with the micro fiber cloth. I use a small square of lexan plastic cut a little larger than the consoles top vent when it's cool to keep it covered when it's not in use. That keeps natural dust fall out of that exhaust vent. Never had an issue with overheating and it always runs cool. Hope some of those tips help.

I would just like to mention that opening your console is not allowed to be discussed on these forums and it can lead to a console ban if caught due to it classifying as "Tampering". If you wish to clean your console your best bet it to carefully use a low powered vacuum cleaner and run it along the air and fan vents of the console.

You are NOT going to get banned for talking about opening your console. He's not asking how, he's asking if it would void anything and if it's recommended. No, you can not open your console, there are tamper seals in place, so if you did, and it was ever serviced by Microsoft, they would just send it back saying you voided the warranty. OP clearly stated he does NOT want to open up his Xbox.

Piggy-backing off what C0ncept2 described perfectly,  the only thing that you can do outside send it to a Microsoft service center, is used compressed air on the rear and side vents, and make sure there is plenty of space around your Xbox for fresh air to circulate.

They did ask as other replies hinted towards it. Yet again, it is against the forum rules to talk about opening your console in anyway and if you would like to talk about this any more, please do so in a private message as here is not the place to continue discussing the matter.
