Xbox One Controller will not connect and they want me to pay to ship it back to them

I purchased a Day one edition of Xbox One and now the controller will not connect to my Xbox.  I called technical support and they want me to send them one back but I have to pay for the shipping.  Why should i pay for their faulty equipment?  Very bad customer service if you ask me.  I buy a product and then less then 1 month it doesn't work and I have to PAY to send them back the broken product.
