xbox live won't let me play

My son's xbox will let him get on the internet and talk to his friends but he cannot play games online.  He also tries to watch netflix sometimes and gets a message that says the movie cannot play because the internet is too slow.  It is at his mom's house and she has an AT&T 768k connection.  Is this too slow to play online?  Thanks

I have always been to told "ping" is what you to look for in gaming.  www.speedtest.net  Is a good place to start and check your speed out.  Also check   www.pingtest.net  the lower the ping the better.  I just checked and I got a ping of 15 ms.

Thanks, I will have him run these tests.  Is there a suggested speed that is too high for the game to work?

768k is probably not the speed that you are actually getting.  All internet speeds are advertised at the maximum speed possible under ideal conditions.  Unfortunately, most customers will never see the maximum speed their package "allows."  While you are at speedtest checking the ping time, also pay attention to Download and  Upload speeds and post back with those results, too.  It's also important to know that connection speeds are fluid and not static, and as such they can fluctuate greatly due to any number of factors.

Ok, did the speedtest, got download speed .67 mbps, upload speed .11 mbps, ping 104 ms.  Ran pingtest and got average 525ms first time, avg 40 ms second time.  Any advice?  Thanks

It sounds like the speeds your son is getting at his mom's house are probably not fast enough to support multiplayer.  A lot of information needs to be transfered back and forth during a match.  I don't know what the minimum supported speed is for multiplayer, but you could try giving Xbox Live support a call to see if they can let you know what a sufficient speed would be.

Just to make sure, he does have Xbox Live Gold doesn't he?

Because if he has Xbox Live Free, there's your problem.

PM for more information if you need it!
