I am unable to connect to Netflix or even Xbox Movies as my Xbox Live account has expired. Is this normal? Everything I read online says I should be able to connect to Netflix without an active Live account.
Sorry to hear it. You are still showing as having a Gold membership even though one is not needed to access apps such as Netflix or Xbox Movies.
What is happening when you try to access those apps? Is there an error code? Have you tried deleting the app, power cycling and then redownloading them?

Maybe the issue is simply that I cannot sign into Xbox Live at all. I'm not entirely sure. I haven't not had a Gold membership in so long I don't know what it looks like not to have one.
Ok, please try turning off your console and then unplug your modem for 5 seconds. When it's fully booted up again turn the console on and see if you can access them
