Xbox live connection error

When trying to access Netflix, or ESPN, or any game with Xbox Live, I get an error message that the app requires Xbox live.  When I go to system settings and do a network test, everything works fine and is connected.  I go back and re-sign in, which says I'm signed into Xbox live gold, but when I try to do anything, I get the same error message again.
