Xbox charges me for expired card

Today I have been charged £25 by the bank the bank  because xbox live has charged for  gold membership of two old accounts me and my brother used to have but have been inactive for a year or so, before hand xbox sent emails telling me that i didn't have live for those accounts because the card is expired, but still the bank has charged me, why?

I would recommend getting in touch with your local Phone Support and speak with a billing agent. They'll be best equipped to work with you on getting things sorted out.

I believe the e-mail they sent would have said that you were in danger of losing your subscriptions because the cards were expired.  However Microsoft will still send your card details to your bank even if it's expired, and if the bank accepts the information then the charge will go through.
