Microsoft stopped making the wireless gaming receiver as a stand alone device some years ago.  All the gaming receivers on sale now are third party products - even if they say 'Microsoft' on the packaging.

When you go to Control Panel > Device Manager, does the device show there as an 'Unknown Device'?

Here is a possible fix:

1.  Go to Device Manager

2.  Right click on the Unidentified Device

3.  Go to Properties

4.  Go to the Drive tab

5.  Click on Update Driver...

6.  Browse my computer for driver software

7.  Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

8.  Windows Common Controller for Windows Class

9.  Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349

10. Update Driver Warning, Click Yes

Let us know if that worked for you.  Thanks.

Hey there Mr Genre! Can you tell us exactly what wireless controller you have?

Do you have the controller that came with the wireless receiver (Xbox 360 Controller for Windows)?
Or are you using a standard Xbox 360 wireless controller (and not specifically the one designed for Windows and comes with the receiver)?

Let us know and we'll work with you from there! ^_^

In addition to what Mister Cerb has asked, can you tell us what version of Windows your computer is using?

Also, can you delete the driver from within Windows Add/Remove software?  Is it listed?

Thanks

For Mister Ceb,

I'm using standard Xbox 360 wireless controller.

For Obsessive Power,

- I'm using Windows 7 Professional

- From Windows Add/Remove software, i got "Microsoft Xbox 360 Accessories 1.1" install.

Hi there Genre,

Did some digging on this and I found a few things that have been reported to work for other users with Windows 7:

You may try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for controller and check if this helps.

Steps to uninstall and reinstall the sound card driver:

1.    Click on start button.
2.    In the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
3.    Select the Xbox controller device and right click on it
4.    Now select properties.
5.    In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.
6.    After the uninstalling the drivers restart the computer. This should automatically install proper drivers for it.

You may also download and install the latest driver for it from manufacturer’s website.

You need not buy any controller specific for window 7. You need to Xbox controller software for windows 7.

I'm sorry to hear that we couldn't get it working for you. If you're using a standard Xbox 360 wireless controller and not the one designed for Windows that comes with an official wireless receiver then it won't work with your PC. You have to have the official receiver and that only comes packaged with the wireless controller designed for Windows.

I hope that helps clear things up! I know it's not the best of news but at least you can return the controller. =)
