Xbox 360 Network Connection Problems

I am having two problems and hoping that I can get some help working these out.

1. The Xbox is unable to obtain an IP address from my router. No other devices on my network are having any problem with getting an IP address - just the Xbox. I have been able to get the Xbox online, but I have to manually enter in the IP Address. This will work but I would still like to know if anyone has run into this problem before and maybe how to fix it.

Router: Linksys WRT54GL

2. Once I can get my Xbox connected, it is fine...but every time I try to connect to Xbox live, it will tell me that it can not connect and that I need to test the connection. The second I test the connection it connects with no problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey mate, please try the steps listed here for resolving that IP address error message, and then let me know how it goes.

Sorry I don't see the link, However if you are talking about the support page "Error: Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem." I have searched the support pages for help and followed them but they still didn't help.

Apologies, I missed the link there, but it looks like you found the correct one. So restoring the Xbox 360 to factory defaults didn't do the trick, then? Have you tried a direct-wired connection to see if the issue persists then?

A direct wired connection is what I was trying, sorry I meant to say that. I have not tried wireless. However with the wired connection I can get it connected to the internet and live,  but I have to manual set the connection information as the Xbox will not obtain an IP from my router. But as I said I have several other things in the house that use the DHCP and they are not having any problems getting an IP.

Then even when I get the connection made it will drop randomly and will not reconnect when I turn the console back on after being off. It always says the same thing that it can't connect and that I need to test the connection. Once I test the connection it will come right back, but I have having to do the all the time.

Do you have another LIVE account on the console that you would be able to test, so that we can determine if the issue is with your network or with the account?

I have found one thing, My DHCP server is trying to assign the Xbox an IP address, I see the router assign an IP address to the Xbox but the Xbox never picks it up.

Have you checked to see if your router has the latest firmware available? Also, what router are you using? Does this issue occur if the router is eliminated (when you're connected directly to the modem, that is)?

I will need to check and see if there is a firmware update for my router, I am using a linksys with the DD-WRT firmware. I have not checked without my router connected. I will check the firmware and also to see if the problem is still there if I remove the router. However it will take a few days for me to do this, My wife works from home and at the time I cannot attempted to upgrade the router or remove it from the network with her on shift and on call. I will update again when this has been completed.

Thanks again for the help.
