xbox 360 fan and console stays on after pressing power button with background downloads on

I have been having this issue for a while with the backgrounds download option.  Whenever I don't have anything to download and background downloads is on for some strange reason my xbox stays on for a while then shuts down.  and just now when attempting to shut off not only did it stay on for a bit but the fan got drastically loud when I turned it off this time.  Is this a glitch with background downloads or what? please help thanks

i think its just the system cooling itself down before shutdown the longer you had it on the more likely you get that.

Since the latest dashboard update I have also noticed the system takes slightly longer to shut down. Please don't take this as a definitive answer but the only reason I can think of is to make sure the system closes down properly thus avoiding any potential problems when the system reboots again.

Hey all - do you have Cloud Storage enabled? If so, this would be the cause for the delay in full shutdown. The console waits until it is powered off to sync with the cloud. :)

This could be in combination with the console expelling residual heat after shutdown.

It's causing you too much hastle you can turn it off

Go system > console settings > Startup and shutdown > background downloads

**Cloud storage must be off

Mine just did the same thing as described staying on after shutdown. Background downloads are off, cloud isnt set up, and it can't be expelling heat because it'd only been on for 2 mins after 11 hours of being switched off (also its Autumn here in England so don't be thinking its the weather heating it up).  I'd probably be happier if u guys had just hit the nail on the head and said "I dunno, maybe xbox's are just built badly"

As somebody else said, the xbox could be cooling down from the usage. This is probably because of the design of the xbox allowing too much heat build up.
