Not too sure how this has managed to happen.. For a long time I could not find options to turn off auto renewal of my gold membership. (Probably because I only looked on Microsoft billing website as opposed to Xbox website) or, the option hasn't been around
very long. Either way, I presumed I would be ok because the card associated with membership renewal had expired, so I wouldn't be charged! My membership still auto-renewed 2 days ago, regardless of the expired card, and I continue to have gold membership..
As far as I know I haven't been charged, but I know Microsoft will probably try and charge me for this! I haven't used gold since the 'auto-renewal', -and I don't want to either! Can anyone help me who has been in a similar situation, what has happened, why
etc...? And if I can cancel that membership?
Unless auto-renewal is turned off, Microsoft will still try to charge you regardless of whether the card has expired or not, which is why it's important to turn it off before they charge you. Even if you can't turn it off via the website, you can always
call support and have them turn it off for you. You will have to call them to have them help you get it sorted out now.
What happens now is they will continue to try charging you for the subscription. Since they can't, you will accrue a balance you have to pay off before you can continue to use gold. They will suspend your account from the service until you pay that balance.
