Why can't I upgrade my account???

Until a couple of weeks ago i hadn't used my xbox for a few months. I had e-mails saying i need to edit my payment options as it was expiring but i left it because I wasn't actually using Xbox Live at all.

Now i go back on and i have a free (silver) membership.

When i go to upgrade my account to a Gold one again it always says "Can't retrieve information from Xbox Live. Please try again later. status code: 80190864"

And when i try and do it on my computer it always comes up with a page saying: "Uh oh...that shouldn't have happened. It appears you have found a glitch in the system"

What's going on? it's been the same for a couple of weeks!

Go to billing.microsoft.com and see if you owe anything. If you do pay that off then you'll be able to buy a membership again. Note also that letting it lapse like you did does not work, it'll still try to charge you because you haven't called up and switched off auto renewal.

That error code usually indicates a billing violation. Either go to https://billing.microsoft.com or call up phone support.
