WPA anything doesn't work with the V1 adapter - it can only use WEP because that was the only security that was out when it was made. If you want to use WPA or WPA2 then you have to buy a new adapter.

Can you try disabling security on your router and then connect your Xbox to LIVE wirelessly? Once that is complete, go ahead and re-enable security, create a new password, and then try again. Let me know how it goes!

Which model of Xbox do you use? Is its circular power button black, white or chromed?

If the power button is chromed, you have built-in WiFi on 2.4GHz only.

If it is black or white, you will need a wireless adapter; what color is it, how many antennas does it have, and what's printed on the body of the adapter?
