Very confusing and possibly uneeded.

So i am getting a new xbox. But i using the old hard drive. Because of course it holds all my memory. But i called up xbox live support and they said to completely transfer everything to the new console (by new from an old slim to a new slim) i need to transfer my license. So my question is, why not just have eveything on the hard drive.(My question mark key insint working)Instead of going through the trouble of transfering licenses. All the DLC's are already on the hard drive so whats the point of transfering licenses. Sorry for the bad grammar.

what you are saying will work

but if you don't transfer the licence you will have issues playing some content online I believe.

But yes I took my old 120 gb HD from my core unit and broke it out of the case and popped it in my new slim...it worked great

A content license isn't the same as the file, it's the digital license associated with the file.  This license applies to the account it's purchased with and the console it's bought on.

So let's say you buy the Majestic Map Pack.  You and anyone on your console can use that content, online or offline.  If you move your HDD to a new console, however, it can only be used by your account when signed in to Xbox LIVE.

That's why you need to transfer your licenses: to use the content offline and to allow others on the console to use it.

EchoGolfSierra, modding an old hard drive to fit into a slim like that is a bannable offense.

I just used a memory stick to transfer all my content over to my new Xbox. My old Xbox had a 120GB from my 1st Elite console.

The old HDD's will not plug into the new Slim model Xbox's. Transferring via cable works as well. The only thing you will need to do is transfer your license which you can do on your new console.

You can go here to learn how.

Link was bad, sorry.

Here are the steps.

1.On your console, sign in to Xbox LIVE using the gamertag that you used to purchase the content.

2.Go to Settings and select Account.

3.Go to Your Billing Options and select License Transfer.

4.Follow any further instructions to transfer the content licenses.

It's really that simple.

Because you're modifying sealed hardware.  It's considered "tampering" and if detected, will get your console banned.

Yup.  Because you need to open the casing on the original Xbox 360 HDD, it counts as a violation/tampering.
