Using data transfer cable for increased storage?

My older 360 Elite model quit for the second time last week. Pretty positive it's not related to the 120GB HDD, as the first time it quit was a thermal problem which I fixed. My question is related to the data transfer cable, is it only used for transferring files, or can it be used as a permanent solution for added storage to the new 360 S model? The S model the family just got is only 4GB, and with the built in wifi and a new live account I've discovered the joy of DLC. I've downloaded 1GB in the first week and need to know if I can get the transfer cable set up to the Elite 120 GB as a permanent storage device, or if I need to purchase a 16GB flash drive for the added storage.

Thanks
